Dorothy I. Clifton collection, 1897-1975.

In the clean-up effort of Valdez citizens after the 1964 earthquake, Dorothy I. Clifton had the foresight to collect and keep important historical documents, records, and papers. She donated them to the Elmer E. Rasmuson Library Archives in 1971. This extensive collection covers historical, political, business, and organizational aspects of Valdez from 1897-1975. Major series in this collection include: The Papers of George Love, a Valdez businessman; the Valdez Organizations and Publications Paper, prior to WWII; the Valdez Historic Sites Project; and the Pioneers of Alaska file. There are photographs of mining activities and towns from the 1930's.

Harrais, Margaret Keenan, 1872-1964.

Margaret Keenan was born in Batesville, Ohio, in 1872. She came to Alaska in 1914 to assume a post as principal of the Skagway schools, a post she held until 1916. She then accepted the post of superintendent of schools in Fairbanks, which she held until 1918. In 1920, Keenan married Martin Harrais, a miner. In 1924, she joined her husband in McCarthy, Alaska, where she worked as a teacher. After the death of her husband, she became U.S. Commissioner and ex-officio probate judge in Valdez, Alask...
